They can be folded in thirds and laid in a diaper cover or they can be secured with a snappi or diaper pins then a cover placed over them. more info....

Preemie Prefolds are great to use on newborns but can also be used as doublers for the remainder of your babies cloth diaper years.
Infants prefold cloth diapers can be used for a long time also. From newborn years right on up till the end. They work great folded into thirds and stuffed in a pocket diaper.
Regulars and Premiums can me used on infants with the right fold. Otherwise they could be to big and bulky.
My personal favorite cover to use over a prefold is wool or bummis super whisper wraps.
